Being aware of Germanys interest on nuclear weapenry the United States had already began developing the atomic bomb, this was known as the Manhattan project. This research and development program was under the diriction of Major General Leslie Groves of the U.S Army Corps of Engeneers and U.S physicist Robbert Oppenhiemer which recruited some of the best U.S scientists engineers, and mathmaticians. Some European scientists, including Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, and Leo Szilard also contributed to the Manhattan project. It resulted in the creation of multipile production and research sites that operated in secret. Project research took place in 30 sites across the United States, Canada, and The United Kingdom. Through the combined efforts of many, a test bomb known as "Fat boy" was created. Its first succesful test was in the desert of New Mexico in july 1945 codenamed the "Trinity". Later two atomic bombs would be created to essentially end the war. Even though the war against Germany was over, the war against japan in the pacific still raged. President Harry S. Truman not wanting any more American casualties ordered the bombing of Japan to end the war.
